Chapter 2235 Operation Dreaded Winter -Part 23

The Demon Hordes especially the goblins knew that the humans would not have released all of their possessed rats into the fray but the panicked move that they made had shown that scare tactics still work even on these trained veterans.

When the rat swarms had been thinned sufficiently, the attacker goblins then decided to move forth to fight against the human defenders. After their fellow companions got killed by those corpse explosion spells, this was the time to bring the pain to the humans.

The human archers realised that they could not do the very same thing as they did previously and thus changed tactics to aim for the wyrm riders instead of releasing a massive wave of arrows. This was also in lieu of the fact that they did not have much ammunition left. Just that few waves of arrows had already depleted close to half of their arrow stock and now that they see the demon horde was capable of slashing all of its arrows into half so easily, it was best to use it more conservatively.

Yet the problem is that they do not have the luxury to use it conservatively. The moment the rain of arrows stopped, the goblins became more aggressive in their attacks. With the spirit defenders and golems destroyed, the current wave of attackers finally breached their human defensive lines.

Swords, spears and axes were already locked together and the humans finally started to feel the fear when the goblins came close. There was still archer support from the walls and in the meantime, the mages were once more concocting some strange large scale spells which they had no idea that the Demon Horde had the capability to instantly remove it with the anti magic barrier that they used in various fights.

While novel for the Demon Horde to fight against golems and spirit defenders enmass, the detection of the large scale magic spells and the subsequent destruction of it had already become a standard protocol procedure for the mages in the Demon Horde. They were merely waiting for its activation before the barriers were put up, breaking their morale further.

The only difference is that the System had decided to charge System points for such anti magic barrier because the various demon hordes had been abusing its powers quite a fair bit despite being minions of Jin. At first, the System did not mind as it needed more data on the use of the barriers.

However, with so many success stories, the System had sufficient data to conclude its workings, its optimisations as well as its effectiveness. Thus, the mages now could not happily just throw one anti magic barrier for fun. It would need to examine and assess the fight and bring up the barrier temporarily to avoid the attacks. Otherwise, any of these barriers that were worth more than 10 seconds would incur System points.

So, while the mages were waiting for the counter attack, the rest of the goblins were clashing with the humans. As usual, the initial wave sent was smaller than usual but once the data given to the System had been sufficient to indicate that they did not have any tricks at the barricades at the moment, the rest of the goblin attackers proceeded to flank the human defenders as well.

Soon, each parry that the humans made, they were forced to think of something to evade or strike before they were stabbed or impaled by other goblins. Even as humans attempted to work together to fight against the goblins, those pesky little things would somehow appear from their blind spots and hit them where they were the most vulnerable.

It was not an understatement to say that the human defensive line was close to obliteration in a matter of minutes until their reinforcements came in from the city gates. Light Calvary rode out from the main gates and rushed without a care in their lives to support the human defensive lines to the best of their abilities.

Unfortunately, such a duty could not be fulfilled because there was no element of surprise from their side. If the mages were to teleport these groups of charging calvary into the fray, they would have taken the Demon Horde off guard, achieving some success. But the fact that the main gates opened ever so slowly to reveal their presence, thinking that they had time and distance to proceed with the reinforcement of the defensive lines, they were heavily mistaken.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om

When the huge metal gates were opening, the Demon Horde already had ballistae aimed at them. And instead of just large arrow projectiles like the ones they used to cut down the arrows, they were actually equipped with battering rams. As weird as it sounds, the ballistae were capable of shooting battering rams from the distance despite their weight.

Of course, it sounded absurd to the humans and if the Demon Horde were to communicate with the humans, this would have been called as a feat impossible. Yet, the Demon Horde was able to defy such a thing because of the use of magic and technology weaved as one hardened entity for war.

Hence, the moment the metal gates were opening, the ballistae aimed at it finally had the chance to fire its battering ram projectile towards it. Immediately, as the first light cavalry tried to squeeze through the doors and move out first, it was met with that flying battering ram right into his face. The sheer force from the battering ram also widened the doors almost instantly and those that were too close to the doors were killed by the knockback force.

This frightened the horses more than the riders, causing them to raise their front legs in an attempt to change the direction. Yet, this temporary standstill for the riders would cause their imminent death too. Another three more flying battering rams came flying through, with only the last one being deflected with the help of the living fortress wall.

That was when the Demon Horde strategists noticed that the living fortress wall was not as omnipotent as it seemed. It was as if it had an attention span rather than all seeing. "Heh, looks like they have a limit too," Moloch said as he observed from afar, still taking the backseat despite being the lead strategist for this battle.
