Chapter 2234 Operation Dreaded Winter -Part 22

Surely, the first wave of goblins took quite a beating when they were up against the golems and spirit defenders. However, the subsequent waves of goblins with the help of the Demopolis Jewel Battalions, were able to crush the remaining portion of the golems as well as totally annihilate the spirit defenders.

The only ones remaining stood no chance even though the mages tried to activate their rune inscriptions through the ground because of the overwhelming numbers that the goblins possessed. Of course, it had been projected that the Demon Rats population would outgrow the goblins because of their fast reproduction rates but at the moment, they had yet to reach that kind of level yet.

The goblins still stand to be the majority of the Hordes and they started to risk their lives to wrestle against the possessed wild strays that were coming from the barricades. Yet, the cats and dogs were not an issue mainly due to the fact that they were easy to see and identify. A shot from their 'demonic' pistols was more than sufficient to take them down.

It was actually the possessed rats that posed the problem and the remaining Jewel battalion humanoid who were proven to be effective in clearing them because of their flamethrower like techniques upon activating the jewels' powers had been prioritised by the possessed swarms to rush over them.Nôv(el)B\\jnn

No matter how much the goblins tried to protect these assets, the humanoids would be killed almost an instant the moment they were identified. From the looks of it, humans might actually have a piped piper that was able to control the rats and help them find their targets. They were not as unfettered as the cats and dogs who were aiming for whoever they could bite.

And even though the Goblins had their own units of flamethrowers, they knew that they would also be targeted by the rats the moment they sent out the first blast. So, the only thing they could do was to keep their flamethrower troopers at the ready once they were closer to the barricades. In the meantime, the goblins pretended to advance slowly but the ground troops were actually waiting for something else.

Soon, the human archers were having a field day when they found out that the goblins were slowing down despite more waves coming in. Most were rather elated that the corpse explosion rat swarms were working rather well but they had no idea that the Demon Horde had tricks of their own too.

Soon through the edges of the snowy fog, came out a huge group of flying units. They were initially horrified that they were dragons but only upon closer inspection, those flying lizards were smaller than the dragons that they knew. Of course, the human archers would change their targets and aim for the smaller dragons.

Just as they thought that the same trick would work against the wyrm riders of the Goblin race, multiple flying projectiles came swirling from the thick of the demon horde. While they were projectiles, they were moving extremely slowly compared to a standard arrow projectile, swirling towards their massive waves of arrows, the human archers did not expect that those demonic looking projectiles had another function.

The minute hundreds of arrows approached close to the swirling demonic projectile, tentacles emerged from the projectile breaking all the arrows that were within its range, rendering their shots useless. And if that was not enough, those swirling demonic projectiles descended down to the barricades and exploded by slamming multiple tentacles around the area before dying down.

One such swirling demonic tentacle projectile managed to reach the living breathing fortress wall of the humans and the wall struggled to fight against it. Both sides extended their tentacles and the rampant swiping and punching of the area caused extensive damage to the living fortress wall before the wall attempted to take a bite of the demon. But just as it did that, the wall somehow puked out the projectile as the tentacles imbued on it were filled with poisonous spikes.

The Living Wall took some damage but it managed to remove it away in time before the poison became effective. That alone gave some of the leaders within the Demon Horde a slight smirk. It seems like their improvised projectile had proven to be useful against the waves of arrows as well as the fortress wall. It was a big win for the Demon Horde though the main objective of this was actually the wyrm riders.

By defending the multiple scores of wyrm riders from the hail of arrows, the wyrm riders were able to ride low to the barricades closest to the Demon Horde and start showering breaths of fire onto makeshift trenches.

Humans were screaming from being immolated alive but the most important thing was that they also burned the rats that were still kept within the trenches. The humans had no idea that the Demon Horde was capable of possessing fire breathing wyrms and these swift strikes rendered their current plan to slow the demons with mind control rat swarms had been destroyed.

However, the worst part of this aftermath was that the rats that died in the fire immediately exploded because of the rune inscription on its body. This meant that those soldiers who managed to survive the fire breath attack could inadvertently be killed due to friendly fire.

The scene was immensely gruesome to the row of barricades and trenches when they saw it. It was to the point, that all of them panicked and released all of the rats straight towards the Demon Horde. They could have survived the fire breath attacks if they were to hide close to the trenches but the humans knew that those corpse explosions from the rat swarm would eventually kill them because they were not able to control the rats.

Continue your saga on empire

This made things even easier for the goblins even though they were the front liners. The larger goblins made to absorb damage moved in with their shields up and as the line was formed, the wyrm riders swooped in once more to burn them up, causing them to explode. The cycle repeats with another line of shielders coming in to protect them while the wyrms ride in.

It was such a systematic way of clearing the rat swarm that even the human generals were in awe that the Demon Horde was more coordinated and disciplined than their elites. They figured that the Demon Horde was not just any mindless form of swarm but something that they should fear and perhaps loss is inevitable.
