Chapter 371 - No Issue
However, there was something that she ignored, the fact that the director was starting to lose the belief that Aiden was really in those mines waiting for her.
A few minutes later, they were now in front of the final cave, or rather, mine, and David couldn't help but say something.
"Let's see if he didn't lie to you like he did with me. Still, I wouldn't be surprised."
He even sighed while saying that as it was clear that the director didn't believe for a single moment that Aiden was in there, patiently waiting for them.
However, this time, he was wrong. He really was inside his back against the wall, patiently waiting for their appearance.
Back inside the cave, Aiden heard a small noise of someone walking. There was no stress entering his body as he knew that they were still far away. It was just the echo because of how this mine was made.
'Seems like she finally arrived and she isn't alone,' Aiden thought as he was sure that Evelynn had accompanied him. He had been able to tell from the footsteps.
'Alright, let's do this!' Aiden thought as he stood up and prepared himself in a fighting position.
He knew that the fight would be over before he even set foot this deep inside the cave, however, he didn't take any risks. He knew that the mechanism could fail at any moment, and if that was the case, then he would most likely die.
If the director was able to reach the depths of this cave with his mana intact. Then, Aiden would die, there were no other options… he would die.
Back up in the cave, two people were walking at a fast pace, however, contrary to the director's expectations. This time, Evelynn was walking at a slower pace which was odd since he would have expected her to go even faster since it was the last cave.
Still, he didn't think too much about it as she was probably tired of doing it since they had been at it for almost an hour without any breaks.
"C-Can we take a break?" Evelynn asked as she was almost out of breath.
The director didn't know yet, but if he answered "yes" then he would be losing access to his mana in a couple of moments.Nôv(el)B\\jnn
'Even if you answer no, the same thing will happen just further down this cave. You're done… whatever choice you make, you're done.'
Evelynn couldn't help but be somewhat excited over what was going to happen in a few minutes. The director wouldn't know what happened to him until he got to the depths of this cave.
'Well, let's hope that he doesn't notice that something is wrong,' Evelynn thought as she knew that the potion's effect was going to be instant.
It was a matter as to whether he would notice or not. Still, even if he noticed it wouldn't be a big deal since Evelynn would shout Aiden's name and he would be coming up as fast as possible.
'It's not like he can teleport away without access to his mana,' she thought as she knew that the moment he was getting affected it would be the end for him.
She still had no idea why Aiden needed to kill this man, however, it didn't matter to her. It seemed like the reason wasn't important to her. Maybe it was because of the contract, but she was currently feeling like she was doing the right thing.
"Sure, let's take a break," the director answered as he knew that he had been pushing her quite hard since earlier. It was also clear that Evelynn didn't have the best physical abilities.
Like all people from this world, she had focused on magic and nothing else which explained this lack of muscle. However, a lack of physical strength didn't mean a lack of strength overall since most people relied on their spells to make damage in this world.
Evelynn smiled hearing his answer as she knew the exact spot where she would need to guide him. She wasn't sure if it was going to work just like they had planned, but she hoped it would.
This was simply the first occasion and it wasn't the one that was sure to work. The one that they had developed was a little bit more deep into the cave.
Evelynn knew that there was a good chance that the director would ignore her request, however, who knows maybe he was going to drink from her bottle.
A few moments later, they had found a spot to sit down and Evelynn got out of her bottle and drank from it without any problems.
'Drink from it, first… check.'
Evelynn knew that she needed to show to the director that it was safe, however, she knew very well that it wasn't and that this bottle was filled with the mana-restricting potion.
The thing is though, he could always refuse which would mean that the plan would be going onto plan B, where he would get affected by it when he was about to reach Aiden.
'Let's just hope that he takes it right now, that would make things a lot simpler,' Evelynn thought, not wanting to activate the mechanism that was deeper in the caves as she knew that there was a good chance that Aiden might get affected and that wasn't something that she wanted whatsoever.
"Want some?" Evelynn asked with a smile, acting as if everything was fine.
The director looked at her and thought that her behavior had been quite weird ever since they had entered this cave. However, out of respect, he had decided to refuse as he didn't that drinking from someone's else bottle was polite.
"I'm fine, don't worry about me," the director answered.
Evelynn was a little confused as to why he would refuse, however, she decided to put a little bit of pressure on him. She wanted him to accept and she would try her best to convince him.
"Are you sure? Water never hurt anybody," Evelynn said knowing damn well that it wasn't water at all inside that bottle.
However, that wasn't something that the director needed to know whatsoever.
"Right, that's true," David replied as he seemed to be hesitating whether to accept or not.
Evelynn noticed that hesitation and immediately handed the bottle his way. She had made that it impossible to see the color of the liquid inside the bottle which made things impossible for the director as he wouldn't know if it really was water or not.
And it wasn't like he had any reasons to doubt her, she had been trying to help him since she had come to him. Telling him about Aiden's location.
Also, to be honest, David had been extremely surprised that Evelynn had come back to see him after everything that she had told him.
"Alright, sure I'll drink some," David answered as he took the bottle and started drinking it without a single worry in the world.
Evelynn had the biggest smile on her face when she saw this happen right in front of her. He had done it, he had drunk the whole bottle…
'He really did it, let's see is he going to notice anything different?' Evelynn thought as she couldn't wait to see what would really happen to him.
The plan had worked, she wouldn't even need to use the mechanism that was deeper inside the cave. Still, she didn't celebrate just yet as maybe the director hadn't really drunk it. She started watching David's neck trying to see a small gulp which meant that he really was drinking.
And… there it was, there was a small indication that he really was drinking which meant that David would soon lose access to his mana.
'To be honest, I really have no idea as to how Aiden failed his assassination the first time, this man is just so gullible…' Evelynn thought, not understanding how Aiden had done such a thing.
He must have made so many mistakes for such a thing to happen.
'Still, let's wait, who knows maybe the effects didn't kick in, or maybe the potion doesn't work on him,' Evelynn thought as she knew exactly how she was going to be able to verify if he had lost access to his mana.
The director had made a little bit of light for her all the way down the caves, and she would be able to see if such a thing would replicate once again.
"Ready to go back down?" Evelynn asked as she looked at the director who had just finished the entire bottle.
For some reason, he hadn't held back when drinking taking the whole thing for himself. He drunk and drunk without the slightest rest which was quite weird all things considered.
"Uh, sure." The director responded as if unsure of his surroundings.
'Just what the hell was in that bottle… was it alcohol or something?' She thought as his behavior made little to no sense at the moment.
It wasn't a potion that would make you disoriented, Evelynn knew that very well since she had experienced it without the slightest problem. The only problem that she had gotten was having problems using her mana since it wasn't accessible anymore.
'It's now time.'
'It's now time.'
She knew that it was a crucial moment because she would be able to determine whether he had access to mana or not.
"Can you light up the path ahead please?" Evelynn asked with puppy eyes as the director lifted his arm up preparing himself to cast one of the simplest spells that exist.
"Sure…"
