Chapter 426 Tales from the Mine, VI
Gun powder from the old guns was overpowering with the smell and threatening to make them lose their sight with the thick smoke becoming more and more prominent.
The other problem they facted was the fact that the little noise their guns made was now attracting more. They weren't shocked anymore when they met the intruders, no gun had ever been fired inside the walls of that mine until today.
That told everyone within it that there were dangerous people attempting to either expose the slave mine or steal the minerals in there.
While this mineral should have been all for Sanctauri to use, Blakeson and his people decided a long ago that they would monopolise it then sell it to the government.
That was the business of this mine, they sold it for billions to the government and the government kept the lights on in Sanctauri, to them that was little to pay for, not knowing that they were also being exploited.n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
In all honesty, even if they knew what was going on here everyone was sure they would just let it happen. As long as the people missing were from the slums, nobody cared about people from the low end of the country.
That's why this place was so heavily guarded, it was worth billions and the guards dying for it were paid peanuts compared to what the people who owned it got. Obviously that wasn't anything they cared about, as long as they were getting paid and putting food on their family's tables.
That seemed to be the trend amongst the guards, everyone just wanted to feed their family. But they weren't willing to walk away from the mine.
Sekani said it before they even got here, if the guards here wanted to surrender peacefully they would absolutely take that option. But if they want to fight to the death, then there wasn't anything that could be done.
"Idiot! Watch out!" Grey yelled to Jesús, regretting why they didn't come up with code names for themselves because he didn't want his name echoed in this accursed mine.
"Just call me J? Don't call me an idiot, senile old man!" He shouted at the forefront, dodging to the side as the bullet grazed his arm.
"Yeah we should've thought of this before we came here." He jumped higher than anyone would've thought possible and landed on another guard's head with his heel.
This single kick rendered the guard completely unconscious. He was about to shoot his brains out when something ahead caught his attention. It was another brigade of guards, a swarm of them, running toward the noise.
Grey was still ontop of the unconscious guard as he let his two weapons lay it on the ones coming to them. The laser gun was faster than an old bullet but also slower than light, it was close to sound speed.
One of the reasons why it was impossible to dodge but not entirely impossible to intercept. The oncoming guards fell one after another, the ones at the back started taking out their laser gun.
"J, come back to the shadows they're going all out!" Grey shouted as he jumped back a few steps and hid behind a wall.
The coming guards had used their comrades as shields and were now safely behind a wall and having a shootout with the intruders.
"Give it up maggots, what you're doing here isn't right!" Grey tried to reason with them.
"Yeah? If I didn't have this job my family would've been in the slums." The other guard yelled back and took a shot that almost took out Grey's big nose.
"Next one won't miss." The guard shot him a proud look.
"Yeah, you would have us believe you missed on purpose?" Jesús yelled from the other side.
"What's so bad about the slums? I know people from there, they're decent people."
Grey Whitmore was a teacher above all else. It wasn't in him to give up on anyone who needed a little light to guide their ways. He would gladly be that light, what he noticed was that these guards were far too young.
They ranged from their early twenties to their late thirties. It was a terrible thing what they were doing but then again, their society was controlled by men who also owned this mine. It wasn't farfetched that they would know exactly what to say to these young men and sway them to stomp on other people.
They were basically paid to look the other way, money did a lot of good things but it was also capable of making humans be as cruel to their fellow humans.
"What's wrong with the slums you ask? Have you seen them? They're dirty and malnourished and some are in this mine working. That's what's wrong with the slums." The guard was clearly not going to give up easily.
"That's right. That could've been easily you, the roles could've been easily reverse..."
"Will you quit it? Stop trying to change his mind, we're here to liberate people who have been kidnapped against their will. Not individuals who hide behind the unfairness of our society." Jesús had had it up to his throat.
Grey smiled sadly at him, "why can't we do both?"
That question lingered in the air. He didn't have an answer to that, so he ignored and continued to shoot. If someone wanted to change their ways, he wouldn't be against that but they would have to do it out of their own volition.
If someone hated what was happening here in this mine, his opinion was that they would immediately jump at the opportunity of putting an end to it.
But with his logic he didn't account for the ones who've been doing this for years, brainwashing was a powerful thing. Nobody within the guard believed that these people would put an end to this mine.
"You don't know our boss! Once we hit the alarm, he will be here in no time with reinforcements!" The guard said confidently.
Jesús simply rolled his eyes, if the boss was the Gilbert he knew he would never come here to be seen by everyone else. In fact he didn't doubt that this entire mine was Blakeson free, nothing would come back to him.
"For our boss, our King! Long Liv—"
