The Earth After Rebirth

Chapter 424 Tales from the Mine, IV

James had already, stupidly had his finger on the trigger. The problem was, he couldn't stop them from firing.

But he was smart enough to move his arms from the wall he was aiming at with Wilfred's scary words. He aimed for the skies, except the skies were actually the top of the wall where he fortunately or unfortunately hit another guard right in the face.

The wall was high enough that everything that happened at ground level was almost unheard. But now they had a guard with a large on his face.

They knew immediately that there were intruders in the premises. Apart from the very gruesome vetting they do to look for guards who won't care about happened in this mine, there was training that was ten times worse.

They all knew better than to shoot up a laser gun when there were other guards up there. Thus they concluded immediately that a person who did this didn't know the rules that were hammered into their heads.Nôv(el)B\\jnn

"Ring the alarm, quickly, we have a breach!" The one seemingly in charge screamed at the younger one who ran two steps forward and fell to his death.

"You probably shouldn't have made it so easy to climb up here." Wilfred said walking a few steps toward the dead body and retrieving his knife.

"Wh-who are you?" The man slowly got to his feet, there were two bodies right in front of them, this couldn't have been good.

"I'm just, a nobody." He said fixing up his suit as if afraid to crease it. He took out a napkin from the breast pocket and wiped some blood that stained his face.

He didn't see them but he could feel something that should not have been there. He also wiped his knife and folded the napkin back into its pocket.

"You, you killed two of the finest men, they had such bright futures..."

"Finest?" Wilfred cut him off, his voice sounding cold and surprised. "They had bright futures? What of the slaves you guard, their futures aren't important?"

The man didn't falter, he had a defiant look on his face. He clutched his chest, it hurt him to see people he considered little brothers killed so senselessly.

"They didn't create this place. Even if they never came here it would still exist." The man spat.

Wilfred smiled sinisterly, "your hypocrisy knows no bounds. You still know what this mine is for but you continued to work for them, to attain something as meagre as money, playing with people's lives and you have the gall to cry for their lives? To damn me?"

He hadn't expected himself to get emotional talking to this man. He had his own past, he had no right to judge but he took this job hoping to wash away his past sins and do good, for his granddaughter.

The butler didn't mean to judge them at all, he just scoffed at the man's hypocrisy. Talking about how fine they were or a bright future when they were using other people's futures and lives as stepping stones.

"They had families to feed just like you, just like everyone else. They didn't deserve to die like this."

Wilfred composed himself and got his emotions in check before he spoke this time.

"In the past, there was a saying, 'if you live by the sword you'll die by the sword' I'm sure this rings true for your fellas here. They knew the risk and thought it was worth it anyway." He smiled sadly, thinking of a time when his own past deeds would catch up to him.

He only hoped that when that time came, his granddaughter was set. So that she didn't need to hassle the way he did in the past, but then again he trusted Sekani. That was part of the major reason he was so loyal to the man.

If he told him to put his head in the train tracks and let the train run him over, he would do it. As long as LJ was taken care of he didn't care much for his own life, he'd lived long enough.

"You, you bastard." The man said stumbling forwards, taking out a gun with his shaking hands.

Wilfred smiled, "James." He called out almost a whisper.

There were a few lights on this side of the wall but it was still overly dark. James was a tall man but Wilfred was much taller, he'd decided to not show himself and hid behind Wilfred this entire time. So when Wilfred called out to him, his head peeked from the other side while the gun was on the other.

The man who was attempting to guilt trip Wilfred was only trying to buy some time for the one of the guards behind him to run away to the other side of the wall. Of course Wilfred saw this but also wanted him far enough so James could practice.

He was enjoying this too much and hated this about himself but he couldn't exactly help it, so he decided to embrace it. They were doing something good here, the manner in which they killed them didn't matter if they saved all those people below.

With the second person showing themselves, the man stopped on his tracks. His face was filled with absolute terror, he was sure the laser bullet would reach him before he took his out. To make matters worse, it was the laser gun, he was completely shitting himself.

But the bullet zoomed right past him which made him smile like a crazed maniac. That smile didn't last that long on his face because Wilfred had thrown his knife which hit its target, it pierced the skin and the ribcage and straight to the heart.

The man frowned slightly. He didn't see Wilfred throwing his knife because he was too focused on the gun, he thought of ways he could have handled this differently. But that was too late now, his heart had completely ruptured, only his brain wa active and even it was slowly dying.

"Bullseye." James said as he popped the young man's head who was far from them.

"Not bad. Now let's take care of those on this wall, shall we?"

James nodded enthusiastically.
