Chapter 179
Zheng Haolei sneered but his tone mellowed out a little. "Alright, Miss Zhuo. There is no need to overreact just yet. It isn't like Mengzhi had shown up in front of the cameras in person and we don't even know whether this person who had made the announcement was really Mengzhi herself. Do you need to be so emotional?"
Zhuo Yixuan read his subtext. "You, you have some ways to take care of this?"
"I will do my best. We are, after all, on the same boat. It will not befit me if you are exposed."
Zhuo Yixuan let out a sigh of relief but she wasn't going to appear to be weak. "Well, I'm glad you know that!"
"……"
Zheng Haolei sneered to himself and gave the phone a vicious look.
Only the Zhuo family would spoil their daughter into a bluffing loser with a bad temperament. Had it not been her family background, she would have died 1,000 times by his hands already.
Suppressing the insidious look in his eyes, he said with a smile, "But I urge you to also be prepared. Now it's not the time to be stubborn and not tap into your family resource. There is obviously someone behind this."
"What do you mean? How's that possible? I didn't offend anyone……"
"If it was just Mengzhi, she would not have been able to gain so much traction in such a short period of time.
"So there is someone behind her who wanted to benefit from––"
"That's not possible," said Zheng Haolei decisively. Even Zhuo Yixuan was taken aback a little. She could tell the sudden gloominess in his voice. She asked, baffled, "How are you so sure of that?"
Zheng Haolei's fingers that had been drumming on the armrest stopped suddenly and, grabbing on tightly to the armrest, a few veins on the back of his hand became visible.
A few seconds later, Zheng Haolei leaned back in his chair and looked up at the dim and barely visible pattern on the wallpaper on the ceiling. He smiled coldly. "I know Mengzhi and I know what kind of a person she is. She was a talented idiot with no background but way too much doggone principles."
"You are saying…?"
"She wouldn't have that kind of background and her doggone principles would not allow her to accept that kind of help."
After remaining silent for a long while, Zhuo Yixuan frowned and said, "Alright. I'll trust you one more time. I will work on the public opinion on my end but you need to find out whether it was really Mengzhi. If she was––"
"If it really was her," said Zheng Haolei as he chuckled softly, his eyes ruthless. "…… that would just be awesome."
"What?"
"There are some unresolved issues between her and we can finally resolve."
"…………"
Another minute or two later, their conversation ended.
Zheng Haolei did not put the receiver of the phone down. He looked at the numbly for a little while and pressed down on another button.
From the other end of the phone came the cautious voice of the pretty secretary from earlier, "Boss Zheng?"
"Go wait for me in the lounge."
"Oh? Okay," the female voice responded shyly and the phone disconnected again.
An hour later.
The lounge with the curtain drawn was dark and the smell after a certain kind of affair, mixed with the smell of tobacco, filled the air.
The woman collapsed on the man's strong chest and her voice a pinched coquettishness. "Why do you always kiss me on my mouth? It's too obvious. Others at work will notice."
Zheng Haolei's eyes were gloomy and he didn't say a word. He was having his post-business cigarette while leaning against the headboard.
The scarlet light was interchanged between dim and bright in the dark.
After a long while, he snickered in a deep voice. "Because your lips are the only part worthwhile on you."
"!"
The woman's face dropped but she dared not say anything. Aggrieved, she lowered her head.
The two walked out of the lounge after they put their clothes back on. Zheng Haolei's tie was loose and he was still frowning when he ran his hand though his messy hair.
He didn't hear a word that the woman said to him and just kept walking straight ahead.
Zheng Haolei stopped abruptly in front of his office, turned, and asked his secretary, "What are the flowers on the wallpaper in my office?"
The secretary was baffled, "Huh?"
"The name of the flowers!" Zheng Haolei repeated impatiently, his voice deep.
The secretary was startled, "I, I don't know."
"……"
Zheng Haolei's eyes became gloomier. "Burmuda buttercup. Remember that."
"Oh, okay."
"You don't need to come anymore starting tomorrow. I will transfer the breakup fee into your bank."
"––?!"
The secretary whipped her head around in disbelief. The man, with his mind made up, had already walked inside of his office without looking back.
The door to his office slammed shut behind him.
