Chapter 174 There is Still Time Left
The evening quiet settled in the grand halls of Volkshalle, its usual air of authority replaced by an unusual calm. Alexander and Julieanne walked side by side through the winding corridors, their earlier activities still lingering in their minds. For a day, the Supreme Leader and his closest advisor had allowed themselves the smallest glimpse of normalcy—a life outside the weight of power.
As they reached the private lounge reserved for moments of reprieve, Alexander gestured for Julieanne to enter first. The room was modest by Volkshalle's standards, with a roaring fire and two leather armchairs flanking a small table. A decanter of Valorian brandy and two crystal glasses waited, as if anticipating their arrival.
Julieanne took a seat, smoothing the creases in her blazer. "It's strange, isn't it?" she remarked, watching the flames. "To spend a day doing something so ordinary, and yet feel so refreshed."
Alexander poured a measure of brandy into both glasses, handing one to Julieanne before sitting across from her. "Even the greatest machines require maintenance, Julieanne. Today served as ours."
She chuckled softly. "A rather mechanical metaphor, but I'll allow it."
They sat in silence for a moment, sipping their drinks. The warm amber liquid brought a welcome heat to the cool evening.
"What surprised me," Julieanne began, "was how many people recognized you, even in your... less formal attire."
Alexander tilted his head slightly, the firelight glinting off his mask. "Valoria's citizens are observant. That is both their strength and their safeguard."
"But none of them approached," she continued. "Even those who seemed certain it was you kept their distance."
"Respect," Alexander replied simply. "Perhaps also fear. They know their leader is always watching, even when unseen."
Julieanne set her glass down and leaned back. "And yet, they smiled. They whispered, pointed, but their faces lit up. They seemed... proud."
Alexander's tone softened. "Because they understand. They know Valoria is strong, not because of one man, but because of unity. What they saw today was their leader walking among them, not above them. That is a bond no enemy can break."
The conversation drifted naturally into the topics of the week to come. Julieanne opened a leather-bound notebook, flipping to a neatly tabbed page. "Tomorrow, you're scheduled to meet with Minister Falk about the Britannian and Francois responses to our alliance with Nippon. They're growing increasingly insistent."
Alexander set his glass down, the sound faint against the wood. "Their insistence is irrelevant. Valoria does not bend to the whims of waning powers."
Julieanne nodded, her pen poised. "Shall I confirm the meeting for the afternoon?"
"Do so," Alexander replied. "We will remind them, through action, that Valoria's alliances are not up for debate."
Julieanne scribbled a note, then glanced up. "And the Nipponese delegation has requested a follow-up on the joint naval exercises. General Mori wishes to present a report on the outcomes."
Alexander's mask inclined slightly. "Arrange it for later in the week. Their insights have value, but I will not have our schedule dictated by external partners."
Julieanne closed the notebook. "Understood. I'll ensure the schedule reflects your priorities."
As the conversation ebbed, Alexander's eyes flicked toward a nearby shelf where a polished chessboard rested. He stood, moving to retrieve it. "Join me for a game, Julieanne," he said, setting it on the table between them.
She arched an eyebrow. "You enjoy defeating me too much, Your Excellency."
Alexander's tone held the faintest hint of amusement. "Perhaps I enjoy the challenge more than the victory."
Julieanne sighed dramatically but leaned forward to set up her pieces. "Very well. But don't expect me to make it easy."
The game began with slow, deliberate moves. Julieanne opened aggressively, sending her knights forward to test Alexander's defenses. He countered with his pawns, creating a wall that forced her to reconsider.
"You're as cautious as ever," she remarked after a few moves. "Always thinking three steps ahead."
"Caution is the prelude to victory," Alexander replied, advancing a rook to trap one of her knights.
She frowned at the board, then grinned. "Perhaps, but boldness has its moments."
With a swift move, she sacrificed her bishop to open a path for her queen. Alexander studied the board for a moment before nodding appreciatively. "A calculated risk."
"And one that paid off," she said, capturing one of his rooks.
The game continued, each move a reflection of their dynamic—Julianne's bold strategies clashing with Alexander's meticulous planning. In the end, Alexander claimed victory, but only after a hard-fought match.
"Checkmate," he said, leaning back. "You've improved."
Julieanne smirked. "I've had an excellent teacher."
After the game, they decided to take a brief walk through the gardens. The crisp night air was refreshing, carrying the faint scent of roses and lavender. Lanterns cast a gentle glow over the pathways, creating an atmosphere of peace.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Julieanne clasped her hands behind her back as they walked. "Do you ever wonder, Your Excellency, what it would be like to live without all this? To step away from the responsibilities, even for a time?"
Alexander's masked gaze turned toward her. "Such thoughts are fleeting. My role is not one that can be abandoned. Valoria's strength lies in its consistency."
She nodded. "I understand. But even leaders need moments of clarity, as we had today. Perhaps we should make this a more regular occurrence."
Alexander's tone was thoughtful. "Perhaps. Balance is essential, even in leadership."
They paused near a fountain, its gentle bubbling filling the silence. Julieanne spoke again, her voice softer. "If I may ask, what drives you, Your Excellency? Beyond duty, beyond power—what keeps you moving forward?"
Alexander was quiet for a moment before replying. "Valoria itself. The people, their potential. My vision is for a nation unshaken by the chaos of the world. That vision is worth any sacrifice."
Julieanne smiled faintly. "Then it's a vision I'm proud to support." Experience more on empire
They returned to the lounge, where Alexander poured a second glass of brandy for each of them. As they sat by the fire, Julieanne spoke again. "Today was unusual, but in the best way. I can't recall the last time we had a day like this."
"Nor can I," Alexander admitted. "But perhaps it is a reminder that even leaders are human."
Julieanne nodded. "A valuable reminder. And one I hope we can repeat, in time."
As the fire crackled softly, the weight of the day began to settle. For a brief moment, the Supreme Leader of Valoria and his trusted advisor allowed themselves to simply be—two individuals bound by duty, yet capable of finding solace in the simplicity of a day well spent.
