Chapter 59: Capturing the Natives
Chapter 59: Capturing the Natives
“Oh, how did the inspection go?”
Hearing Zhao Xiyan’s hopeful query, Qi Yue suddenly snapped back to reality and hurriedly recounted the discovery from last night.
“When you first fell off the horse, did it seem like it wasn’t a big deal, but then the pain worsened day by day, and after a while, you lost sensation in your legs?”
Zhao Xiyan nodded repeatedly, recounting the incident as well as his medical treatment over the past two years.
Everything proved that Qi Yue’s deduction was correct.
The blood vessels in Zhao Xiyan’s legs were necrotic, and his tendons had atrophied; under normal circumstances, there would be no possibility of him standing up again.
But she had the Ghost Gate Needle Technique, and if she could find the rumored White Rhino to remake his tendons, she was fully confident that she could make him stand again.
Seeing Qi Yue’s solemn expression, the wall of hope that Zhao Xiyan had always maintained also began to wobble a bit.
“Yueyue, is it very difficult for my legs to stand again?
“It’s too early to say.” Qi Yue pursed her lips. “But I will figure something out.”
She also didn’t dare to be too assertive in her statement.
After all, this world was vastly different from her past life; even the cattle looked different, so it was hard to say whether they could even find a White Rhino.
Even if they found a white rhino, it was uncertain whether the horn on its forehead would have any medicinal value.
Seeing Zhao Xiyan’s expression darken, Qi Yue also felt a bit uncomfortable.
On one hand, she felt sad for Zhao Xiyan’s plight, and on the other hand, she felt powerless as a healer unable to cure her patient.
He could have been dominating the battlefield, sweeping the world with a horse and a spear, but now he was bound to this wheelchair, trapped in this savage land.
It would be difficult for anyone to accept such torment.
Zhao Xiyan suddenly raised his drooping head and stared intently at her.
“Alright, I will wait for you to figure something out.”
After saying this, he smiled at her briefly; a turbulent undercurrent surged beneath his handsome brows and eyes.
“Then I’ll go out first.”
He almost fled in haste.
Qi Yue could feel that Zhao Xiyan’s recent smile was merely concealing the despair in his heart.
He didn’t want to reject her kindness, nor did he want to reveal that he actually yearned to stand up.
That, in turn, sparked a strong impulse in her. She decided she must find any means to locate the White Rhino.
Even if she had to turn over every cattle in Beiyuan, she would search.
If there wasn’t a White Rhino in Beiyuan, then she would go to Nanyue, Western Chu, Donggao… to any country on this continent.
She would eventually make him stand again.
That afternoon, while Qi Yue was planning to walk through the forest, just as she reached the edge of the woods, she saw two natives waving at her before quickly disappearing into the forest.
“Huh, what’s that all about?”
Was it a challenge to a duel?
Or perhaps, unable to attack her, the natives had set up traps in the forest to lure her in and then “snap”?
Qi Yue thought it over and did not act rashly.
What if it was a diversion?
She didn’t immediately follow. Instead, she took out a handful of beans soaked in Spiritual Spring Water and called out.
“Big Black, Little Black, Third Black… come back and eat.”
These were the names she had given the fifteen unusual cattle.
She was terrible at naming, so she simply ranked them by size, starting with the biggest.
No sooner had she spoken than three unusual cattle charged out of the depths of the forest like lightning, followed by a few others.
Qi Yue, outside by the wooden trough filled with beans, began bargaining with the cattle as if speaking to people.
“I’m going up the mountain for a bit, you guys stay here and watch the house for me. Do a good job, and there will be a reward when I come back.”
The unusual cattle collectively mooed, and Qi Yue confidently entered the forest.
Zhao Yonglian learned of the situation and called out to join her, but she stopped him.
It was easier for her to solve problems alone; if things got too hard, she could always retreat into her space. Taking someone with her would complicate things.
As soon as she entered the forest, she felt that she had been targeted.
Qi Yue pretended not to notice but was prepared to enter her space at any moment.
She walked leisurely for a long distance, yet the person behind her followed at a safe distance.
She began to wonder what the natives were actually trying to do.
Had she hit the nail on the head, actually falling into the trap of a diversion tactic?
However, that would depend on whether they could defeat those oxen.
Qi Yue hooked her lips slightly and quietly leaped onto a large tree.
A few minutes later, she indeed saw a person in white rushing toward her.
He was in his thirties, dressed in white, with a folding fan in his hand, giving off quite the free-spirited scholar vibe.
Yet, this man didn’t quite seem like a local, did he?
Could it be that he was their hired strategist?
Qi Yue couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
“Hey, who are you? How are you involved with the locals?”
Qu Wei was wondering why he couldn’t see anyone when he suddenly felt a chill on the back of his neck, and a sharp knife was on his throat.
“I am called Qu Wei. Miss Qi, what are you talking about, getting involved with the locals? I don’t know.”
“Haha, you know who I am and still say you have no connection to the locals?”
As Qi Yue spoke, she applied a bit of force under her hand, “Speak up, are you the one who had them target my house?”
“No, no, no,” Qu Wei was almost trembling.
“I truly don’t know anything, I just came looking for you.”
Seeing that Qu Wei was nearly scared out of his wits, Qi Yue lost the interest to frighten him further, although the knife never left his neck.
“What do you want with me? How do you know of me?”
“Miss Qi, in Northern Ridge nowadays, who doesn’t know about General Qi’s daughter, Qi Yue? On your first day here, you chopped down four giant trees with your bare hands. The next day you killed a strange ox bare-handedly and even captured fifteen of them to guard the house! If somebody doesn’t know you, are they even human?”
Oh, this middle-aged uncle is quite the talker?
Clearly a second-rate exile who had become an old troublemaker after many years here.
She hated this kind of person the most.
Relying on having read a few books and knowing how to sweet-talk, thinking they are endlessly charming!
Qi Yue snorted coldly, almost chopping off Qu Wei’s head with her firewood chopping knife.
“What do you want with me?”
“I’ve got no particular business, just heard of Miss Qi’s grace and wanted to see it with my own eyes…”
Qu Wei, with his glib tongue, was thinking of saying some flattering words when he suddenly felt the pressure on his neck relax. Overjoyed, he spoke even more boldly.
“Miss Qi truly lives up to her reputation of being beautiful and kind, talented and stunning…”
By the time he turned around, Qi Yue had already disappeared. Looking down the path, he indeed saw a red figure quickly vanishing.
“Indeed, even her shadow is so beautiful…”
He muttered a compliment and followed her.
Meanwhile, Qi Yue swiftly left the forest and hurried home.
Although there were fifteen oxen there, and she didn’t need to worry too much, the locals were unpredictable, and she feared an accident might occur.
From a distance, she saw that the house was still intact, neither engulfed by fire nor damaged, and she breathed a sigh of relief.
Just out of the forest, Zhao Yonglian came running to greet her.
“Niece-in-law, are you alright?!”
“I’m fine, how are you all?”
Qi Yue gestured to the arrows and quivers scattered on the ground, “The locals came again?”
“Yes,” Zhao Yonglian nodded and recounted what had happened.
It seems that as soon as she left, the natives appeared, mumbling something indecipherable. Then they started shooting arrows at the house, hitting some of the strange oxen.
The enraged oxen charged and chased the natives all over.
Two locals took the opportunity to sneak into the yard, intending to deal with Zhao Xiyan, but he subdued them single-handedly on the spot.
“Zhao Xiyan captured the natives?” Qi Yue was somewhat surprised.
Those natives were short and quick, also deceptively strong, yet Zhao Xiyan had managed to subdue two simultaneously?
But she quickly regained her composure, for Zhao Xiyan was, after all, the War God, and even disabled, he was not someone ordinary people could compare with.
It was also her fault for always feeling that he needed protection due to his disability, which might have hurt his feelings as well.
With that thought, she hurried back to the courtyard, and sure enough, saw Zhao Xiyan sitting in a wheelchair, holding an ax in one hand and testing the blade with the other.
Beneath him lay two tied-up natives.
