Chapter 434 – Third Time!
After Atlas' turn was done, Max went once again. He could feel the difference in his avatar's control, just like Doctor Ardi had mentioned before.
He was doing his best as this was his last run in this test.
The first nine tests were pretty easy. He managed to cut 20 seconds out of his previous time, arriving at the tenth test in 5 minutes.
Watching Atlas' tenth run made him realize something.
'Attlas isn't going fast at the tenth test and focuses on dodging with precision.'
The blond-haired man capitalized everything in his arsenal and used his strongest weapon, his dynamic vision and a reaction time that was faster than Max's.
It was a doable strategy for Max, but he wouldn't do that. Doing that was equivalent to throwing away his biggest weapon, his speed.
So, he gambled. If this succeeded, he might have got a faster time than Atlas'. He hoped the Goddess of RNG would stay by her side and not be jealous of his girlfriend, Lily.
'I beg you, dear Goddess. Give me an easy trap!'
He ran at full speed and concentrated.
— This guy has no chill
— Did he not learn from Atlas? The man move slow so he can react to the trap in no time
— No, Breeze did what all speedrunners do. Risk it all to gain the fastest time.
— This man is a real speedrunner. Don't forget that Atlas moves slowly because he's a tactician in Horizon Online… Villain Tactician!
— Go Breeze! Sub 8 is possible! Atlas has shown the way!
Getting used to the kind of traps available, Max skillfully dodged them all. He arrived at the 100 meter line in no time without having a scratch. From now on, the hallway would get narrower each 10 meters, which would help him to wall run and wall jump easily.Nôv(el)B\\jnn
This wasn't a problem at all for him. He continued down the hallway and then…
"Fuck."
The RNG Goddess was jealous of his girlfriend.
Three traps activated at the same time in a span of 1 meter. An axe was swinging from the middle, and the fire shot from the wall near the ground to the left and right, creating an X shape. To make things worse, a 2-meter long pitfall suddenly appeared in front of him.
"Damn you, RNG Goddess!"
— RNG not friendly, 1 star
— This is hell. He got bad RNG, so much that it don't allow him to progress
— Isn't this just impossible? How can he get past this?
— If you get past this without dying even once, I will donate 100 thousand diamonds!
— Don't be so tense! Stop for a few seconds and think it through
— Thinking for a few seconds will still allow you to beat Atlas' time. Be careful!
The suggestion given by the chat was reasonable. Right now, only 6 minutes have passed since the test. Max still had 2 minutes left. Spending 5 to 10 seconds to stop and look at the way out was the best way to stay alive and not waste 40 seconds he spent reaching the 100 meter line.
But that was just impossible.
'I won't be able to stop in time.' He thought as he gritted his teeth, finding a bit of gap on the side to pass through. 'Let's just pass through there.'
The gap between two flames, a 80 cm hole that no humans could possibly pass because they could be cut by the axe in the middle or fall inside the pitfall.
But… Max had to do it. He increased his speed instead of slowing down, surprising the viewers who watched the livestream.
— What are you doing?!
Continue your journey at empire
— This is insane. Is he planning to go through it without stopping?
— Ridiculous
— Hahahaha go for it.
— Do it! If you're a man, jump!
And he did. Max leaped into the air and tried his best to stay near the wall without touching it. His back was close to the wall as he spun his body instinctively.
The axe passed through his shoulder, barely missing when he spun. The heat from the fire was soaring hot, he could feel it in his skin. However…
Thud!
Max was able to pass it. Barely. His hair was burned and his bodysuit had holes here and there. His skin was slightly burned and stung, but it wouldn't stop him from advancing.
"Fuck you, RNG!" Max shouted loudly to pump his energy and continued on his way.
Passing the 100 to 200 meter line was pretty easy. There were no annoying traps just like the one in the 100 meter mark. 7 minutes had passed since the start of the test, and there was no going back now. If he died, he would have no chance to beat Atlas' run.
And thankfully, the Goddess of RNG was only a bitch at the start. Whether the test gave him a chance or whatever, there was only one annoying trap. For other people, that was.
'How can other people get past that?'
The next annoying trap prepared for him was a combination of 4 meter long pitfall and 6 flying arrows. Jumping straight to reach the other side was a suicide, considering the arrow was on the left and right side of the narrow hallway alternatively, following each other.
For him, though, it was doable. He jumped to the right wall and ran. When the first arrow passed the left side, he jumped to the right wall to dodge. He did it again after the second arrow passed. He couldn't rush this or he would get hit, the hallway was now less than 1.5 meters wide.
After the six arrows passed, he immediately cleared the pitfall and broke into a run. That took longer than he thought.
08:01:06
Sub 8 minutes was now impossible because of the second annoying trap, but there was still a chance to beat Atlas.
30 meters to the red button. Max jumped to dodge a flying axe. He rolled on the ground and got bruises on his arms, but it didn't take 1 second to recover and continue.
08:06:21
14 meters from the finish and red button. Another fire trap + pitfall combo appeared. Max immediately rushed and leaped before the fire intensified. He got burned but not so bad. He could still jump once again to clear the course.
He had to admit that he was too careful in the first half, spending a lot of time strategizing. He didn't plan to go slower, but he did. If he went with the speed that he showed in the first run, he would arrive at this point in under 8 minutes.
But he couldn't complain.
08:08:24
3 seconds left to break the record.
Max was 4 meters away. No trap was in sight, a grin appeared on his face as he leaped forward, stretching his hand.
The palm of his hand hit the red button.
And for the third time today…
