Chapter 54: 50. A woman is the best means to understand a man (pleading for follow-up reads, pleading for collection~)

"Giggle, Margaret, you're really so lucky, your boyfriend is truly romantic and so elegant!"

With a cigarette in hand, Lucy's ear-length hair was slicked down with hair wax and topped with a headband as a decorative piece. The temperature inside the bar allowed Lucy to shed her fur coat, now wearing a form-fitting fringed gown that was exceedingly sexy.

Such attire was also the most fashionable for women at the moment.

"I think those two men still haven't figured out what just happened!"

At this, Lucy laughed again.

Donnie's romantic kiss had caused Richard and his company to sheepishly leave, and it was only after they left that Lucy realized Donnie was actually Margaret's boyfriend.

"What I'd really like to see is which beautiful lady will slap them in the face later in this bar!"

Donnie said with a smile, holding his cocktail.

You wouldn't see cocktails at Block Tavern, but in a large tavern like The Fuli Tavern, cocktails had become mainstream.

"Giggle, Donnie, you're such a witty man!"

Lucy's beautiful eyes glittered.

Donnie laughed, "As far as I know, Mr. Nucky is also a very humorous man!"

Lucy laughed, "So you know Nucky!"

"Of course, Nucky and I are good friends!" Donnie nodded.

"Ah, now I remember, you're Donnie Block, I've heard Nucky mention you before!" Suddenly, Lucy realized why the name Donnie Block had sounded familiar to her when she first heard it.

"Is that so?" Donnie asked curiously, "What did Nucky say about me?"

"Nucky said..." Lucy playfully looked at Donnie and laughed, "If you want to know what Nucky said about you, just buying me a drink isn't enough!"

"If this were New York, I'd definitely take you, Lucy, to Broadway to see Victor Herbert's 'My Golden Girl'."

Victor Herbert was a very famous composer of the time, and his latest work, the opera 'My Golden Girl,' premiered at the beginning of the year at Broadway's Apollo Theater, Universal Theater, and Woods Theatre, becoming the hottest opera show at the beginning of the year!

"Wow, so you like operas, Donnie!" Lucy exclaimed dramatically.

"Last year when I came back from New York, I saw one, and I was just astounded by the spectacle of the theater!" Donnie said, somewhat nostalgically.

"Is that so? I'm so envious, really wish I could also have the chance to go to New York to see such a performance!" Lucy said with envy and anticipation.

In reality, she hadn't even seen a single opera, but that didn't stop Lucy from loving them.

Or rather, to put it more bluntly, what Lucy really loved wasn't the opera itself, but the elegance that came with appreciating opera.

"I think if you really want to see it, Mr. Nucky would definitely take you, I remember that Nucky used to go to New York around this time every year!"

Donnie said with a smile.

"This year isn't like other years!" Lucy said a bit dissatisfied, "Okay, let's not talk about these unhappy things anymore, let's drink instead!"

"Of course, we must never disappoint fine wine and beautiful women!"

Donnie said nonchalantly.

With Donnie's involvement, the atmosphere at the table grew even livelier. Under Donnie's skill at setting the mood, Lucy quickly recovered from her slump. Before long, she took him by the hand and entered the center of the dance floor in The Fuli Tavern. With the accompaniment of the stage's jazz music, they began to dance gracefully.

"Donnie, you are a very elegant and witty man, I'm really envious that Margaret has you as her boyfriend!"

Under the influence of alcohol, Lucy clung to Donnie and said lazily.

"I'm even more envious that Nucky has you, Lucy, as his girlfriend, beautiful, fashionable, every minute and every second utterly captivating!"

Donnie's voice was low and magnetic, intoxicating, as his big hand slipped slightly down Lucy's back.

"It seems we are both lonely people!"

Lucy was unconcerned about Donnie's actions, biting her lip gently, her seductive power instantly at MAX!

But then Lucy's voice grew more melancholic, "No, that's not right, only I am a lonely person, because in a while you'll be going back with Margaret!"

"Isn't Nucky waiting for you at the tavern?" Donnie's hand had now slid down from Lucy's waist.

Lucy showed no dislike for Donnie's behavior, instead she seemed to enjoy it, gently swaying her body.

"Nucky is not in Atlantic City, now who knows which woman's arms he's in!" Lucy said with a touch of resentment.

That was the answer she was looking for.

"That's truly disappointing, if I had a girlfriend like you, Lucy, I would take you with me wherever I went!"

"If you were my boyfriend, Donnie, I would definitely have gone home early too!"

A pair with their own ulterior motives danced in the ballroom, their bodies now unconsciously pressed together.

"Maybe tonight I don't have to go home!" Lucy said softly while clinging to Donnie's chest.

Donnie, with a tacit understanding, said, "I can take Margaret home first!"

.

The latter part of the night was quite exciting, but it's something that can only be understood and not conveyed in words.

Donnie's choice was not because he was swayed by passion, but because he knew that as days went by, no matter how much he tried to suppress it, Nucky would definitely see him as a rival, especially as his own influence and financial power grew.

And at this time, Donnie needed an inside man to pass him Nucky's intelligence!

Who could be more suitable for this role than Nucky's bed companion?

Although Lucy was a schemer, schemers, aside from being bitchy, could actually do a lot of things.

Driving away from the hotel, on his way to Block Tavern, Donnie always felt like he was the villain.

Forget it, if I'm the villain, then so be it, I wasn't exactly a good person in my previous life anyway!

Donnie shook his head, casting aside these trivial thoughts, and when he returned to the tavern, he informed Robert that Nucky had already left Atlantic City for Washington.

"Where did you get this information from? Are you sure?"

Robert asked with surprise, as if Nucky was not in Atlantic City, the general over there would certainly be able to make more moves.

"You don't need to worry about where I got this information from, but I can tell you that it is very reliable, there won't be any accidents!"

Donnie stated with certainty.

Seeing Donnie's attitude, Robert believed him and said, "Now the most important thing is, how do we pass this message on to the general."

They needed to pass this information to the general, but couldn't tell him directly, so Donnie and his team needed an indirect strategy!

But Donnie had a plan in mind, "It's simple, you go call Dwight over, he's the most suitable one to handle this!"

Robert didn't understand but still went to call Dwight over.

"Mr. Block, do you have something for me?"

Dwight asked Donnie, habitually bowing as he spoke.

Donnie smiled and said, "I guess you must still have some friends in Atlantic City, right?"

Dwight hurriedly said, "Mr. Block, rest assured, I haven't been in contact with them since I followed you!"

Being a pickpocket is a profession scorned at the lowest end of society, no matter the country or era.

Ever since joining Donnie's team, Dwight's life had been nothing but comfortable.

No longer needing to steal with fear of getting caught, nor worry about being bullied by street thugs.

With wine and women every day, he almost forgot his craft!

"There's no need to deliberately distance yourself from them, maybe in the future, I will need your and your brothers' skills!" Donnie, although disdainful towards Dwight's profession, never showed it and would not sever Dwight's contact with his accomplices.

To get things done, especially in a city like Atlantic City, you need to have all kinds of people around.

Nobody knows when you might need them, hadn't Donnie used Dwight's skills to deal with Dennis before!

"Yes, Mr. Block, I'll call my buddies over tonight so you can meet them!"

Dwight thought Donnie wanted to recruit them!

Though Donnie knew he would need them, he had no intention of meeting these people; having Dwight lead them was enough.

"There's no need, but it's appropriate for you to see them tonight...."

In an era without the internet, the fastest way to spread a message in Atlantic City was to 'casually' spread it in crowded places.

The best suited for this task were indeed Dwight and his associates.

Under Donnie's instructions, that very evening Dwight spread the news that Nucky had left Atlantic City and gone to Washington.

Although the general had lost Vince, his Vanguard Officer, he still had some hidden forces in Atlantic City, so by the next day, the general had learned the news.

"They're trying to undermine my backing!"

The general sat in his study, facing an old man over sixty years old, slim and expressionless.

"Nucky's departure is a very important matter for us. Help me intimidate David Jabbar!"

The old man shook his head, "I'm old, I no longer have that ability."

The general's face turned grim; once upon a time, when this old man was young, he was the scythe of death in his hands. Although not many people in Atlantic City recognized him, everything he did for the general was sensational in Atlantic City.

Now the man was old, just like him!

"So, are you leaving me too?"

The old man said, "I can give my life to you at any time, so naturally, I'm not leaving. I might not be able to do this task, but there is someone who can. However, there's something I don't quite understand, you want to save Vince, why intimidate David Jabbar?"
